Fourth Leg of the Tecumseh…Gobbler Rocks !

Update: The hike is still on. Actually, the snow cover should make for a beautiful walk. It seems prudent to shorten it though as it is more difficult to walk in three inches than on bare ground. Cold start but warming quickly and little wind. About 4 miles.

Meet at noon at KMart (old east store) on Sunday January 14 for a caravan out to Brown County for the fourth leg of the Tecumseh Trail from Prang Pond north to Highway 45 near Helmsburg. Forecast as of now, sunny and high of 23. The trail passes by Jacques’ old place on Indian Hill Rd. About 6 miles. This is also the section of the forest famed for the presence of “Gobbler Rocks”, large sandstone rocks discovered high in trees (see Old Farts video below). Sorry, no guarantee we’ll be able to see the rocks as they may be well off the t trail, but ……

Third Leg of the Tecumseh Trail…..

Meet at 11 am Sunday Jan. 7 at the old KMart east (just by Bloomingfoods) for a caravan out to Yellowwood Lake. This hike will be about 4 miles (about 2 hours) if you want it shorter or around 6 miles (about 3 hours) if you do the whole thing. Your choice. We’ll leave a vehicle at the dam (marked by a “P” on the map) and drive up north to Prang Pond (see map) to hike south through the forest towards the lake (dark blue line on the map).

Why not hike all the Tecumseh Trail this season ?

yellowood signIt occurred to me that since Yellowwood is a hot topic right now, why not as a group this hiking season, hike the entire Tecumseh Trail in segments ?  So, beginning this Saturday (the weather looks lousy for a Sunday hike) December 16th, meet at noon at the old east KMart  parking lot for a caravan out to the south end of the Tecumseh Trail near Crooked Creek Lake south of Belmont. We’ll hike the 5 miles north up to Belmont. Eventually in the coming weeks we’ll see the impacts of logging in the forest, but this first section has great views and plenty of forest. If you know where the trailhead is on Crooked Creek Road, you can meet us there around 12:30-12:45. This hike should take around 2 1/2 hrs.
By the way, the Tecumseh Trail is over 40 miles long in its entirety. A good goal !
